The Temple of Literature is our country’s first university, preserving the cultural and historical traces of the thousand-year-old capital. This place has trained many generations of brilliant people for the country, and it is a “mirror” reflecting the spirit of studiousness, appreciation for talented people, and our nation’s studiousness traditions. The Temple of Literature is a well-known Confucian monument of considerable artistic, aesthetic, and architectural importance. Visitors will be able to view many rare documents and artifacts, including the 82 doctoral steles designated as “World Documentary Heritage” by UNESCO.

History of the establishment of the Temple of Literature:

– 1070: The Temple of Literature was established during King Ly Thanh Tong’s reign.

– 1076: King Ly Nhan Tong founded the Imperial Academy near to the Temple of Literature, which was designated for the offspring of kings, lords, and great nobles at court.

– 1484: King Le Thanh Tong erected steles for persons who passed doctoral examinations beginning in 1442.

– 1802: King Gia Long named this as the Temple of Literature – Hanoi

– 09/03/2010: UNESCO officially recognized the 82 steles at the Temple of Literature – Imperial Academy as a World Documentary Heritage

Opening hours and entrance fee to the Temple of Literature:

Time: All days of the week from 8AM to 5PM

Ticket price:

– 70,000 VND for adults

– 35,000 VND for Vietnamese students (with student card or student ID)

– 35,000 VND for people with severe disabilities, the elderly (Vietnamese citizens aged 60 or older, with citizen identification)

– Free for children under 16 years old

In addition, the Temple of Literature also provides visitors with an automatic commentary service in foreign languages ​​for 100,000 VND/machine.

* Note: Students need a student card and for people with severe disabilities, the elderly need an ID card and are Vietnamese citizens aged 60 or older.
