Since 1939, cyclo was a popular means of transportation for the Vietnamese people in the past. In the early years of the 20th century, only the aristocracy and the wealthy could afford to use cyclo to travel mainly in big cities such as Saigon, Hanoi and Hue.
The word “cyclo” is called by Vietnamese people from the French name “cyclo”, invented by a Frenchman named Coupeaud in 1939.
Nowadays, the old quarter cyclo tour has become one of the typical activities of Hanoi tourism. By sitting on a cyclo, slowly going through each street and alley to admire the cultural features and daily life activities of the people, international tourists have interesting experiences when visiting Hanoi. For Hanoians, the image of cyclos has long been an important part of the city’s typical cultural picture. The image of cyclo drivers leisurely pedaling on the old streets, with the characteristic curved glass bell, has become a symbol of peace and tranquility in urban life. It is a special highlight in the landscape of Hanoi, contributing to the diversity and richness of the capital’s culture.
On a cool, refreshing day in the capital, sitting in the front seat of a cyclo, slowly going around the capital and listening to the bustling sounds in the heart of the old town, chatting with the driver in a friendly and open manner, is truly an interesting experience.
Two main cyclo routes are operating in the capital:
– Route 1: Yen Phu Street – Cua Bac – Nguyen Tri Phuong Street – Hanoi Citadel
– Route 2: Yen Phu Street – Tran Nhat Duat – Tran Quang Khai – Le Phung Hieu – Ngo Quyen – Trang Tien – Dinh Tien Hoang – Le Thai To – Hang Khay – Dinh Tien Hoang (2nd time) – Hang Dau – Cau Go – Tran Quang Khai (2nd time)
Prices for cyclo routes may change depending on the time and negotiation with the driver, but usually the price will range from VND150,000 – VND300,000 for each route. Tourists can find a cyclo on the road or book a cyclo tour by route via hotline 02473000636.
